Sewing Patterns to Flatter Apple Shapes

by Leah Taylor on July 19, 2010

I was asked by a customer this week to recommend some sewing patterns that suit apple shapes, that is, the “rounder tummy”. I get great pleasure from helping customers find the perfect pattern for themselves, so I relished the chance to help!

When it comes to sewing for apple shapes people often say “choose a wrap-around”, because the pattern sizing is more forgiving. Because of the nature of the wraparound, it doesn’t need to fit perfectly so you don’t need to make alterations for a larger tummy. However my customer wanted something that WASN’T a wrap-around, and there are two great basic shapes that are very flattering for apples – the tunic, and the empire line. Both skim the tummy area so helping to minimise it.

One of the patterns that I think is good for apple shapes is Serendipity Studio’s Sabrina Tunic, as it has a flattering empire line style, and also a tie across the middle which I find helps ‘hide’ the offending bulge (though I think Gok might say you’re supposed to avoid anything that draws attention to the area you’re trying to hide).

Serendipity Studio's Sabrina Tunic is an empire-line tunic style which will skim the tummy area

Another nice tunic style is Kwik Sew 3610, which is incredibly easy to sew up.

Kwik Sew 3610 - a very easy pattern that skims the tummy area and is great for apple shapes

For easy to make dresses, Kwik Sew’s 3675 empire style would make a great choice-

As would Vogue’s Very Easy V8574 pattern-

Vogue 8574 has a loose but fitted, flattering empire line style

And for something a bit different, Kwik Sew 3718 is an interesting tunic-style dress –

Kwik Sew 3718 is a little different, and has a tunic shape great for apples, although avoid the drawstring around the hip/waist area

The customer chose the Sabrina Tunic top / dress pattern and the Kwik Sew 3610 tunic top pattern. I can’t wait to hear how she gets on.

Hi There,
Love the apple frame sewing patterns. I am going to try the Vogue, but is there a good pattern for pants anywhere. I get things to fit the waist, and the legs are friggin balloons..
